We have been learning about writing instructions. Today we did an oral language activity where we had to give instructions to a buddy on how to draw a simple picture. It was challenging at times to give really specific instructions so that our buddy knew exactly what to draw. In our pairs, we were either 'Person A' or 'Person B'. Person A started by giving Person B instructions on how to draw a bee, and then we swapped over and Person B gave Person A instructions on how to draw a plant. This was good practise for next week, when we are going to try writing instructions for drawing either a ladybird, an owl, or a snowman.
This is a Year 3 and 4 class blog at South Hornby School. We are in the Uru Mānuka Cluster. This is a place where we will share our learning. Please note that some of it will not be complete, it will be my first drafts. Remember to be positive, thoughtful and helpful when you leave a comment. Please check out our individual blogs as well.

The Longest Scarf in the World- Adding text to a book
Over the last two weeks, we have continued with the task of adding text to a book. This time we wrote a narrative to match the pictures for the book using Explain Everything or Google Slides. "The Longest Scarf in the World. This was a much longer book and provided us with the opportunity to add a lot more detail.
We had to:
- include adjectives
- use conjunctions
- use the same tense
- try to use similes

Measuring our heights using string
In maths, we are learning about measurement. Today we had fun measuring our heights using string. When we measured each other, we made sure that we started measuring from our heels, right up to the top of our heads. Then, we laid the strings out on the table to compare our heights. After that, we lined up in order to check if our string measurements were accurate, and they were! Ethaniel is the tallest, followed by Cody. Gracie, Victor and Ngawari are all about the same height. Ocey and Mesake are also about the same height, and are the shortest in our group.

Buy this jersey!
In Cybersmart with Miss Morgan last week, we created short ads to sell our jersey. We had to try to remember to:
- introduce ourselves
- say what we were selling
- describe the jersey's purpose (so that you would want to buy it)
- give a price
- say where you can buy it from
Have a look at some of our adverts- would you want to buy any of our jerseys?

Instructions
How to make jelly.
This week we have been learning how to write instructions.
We learnt that you have to be bossy when writing instructions and start each instruction with a strong verb.
You have to put the instructions in order and began by telling people what you need.
We wrote instructions on how to make jelly.
Here are some examples of our work and the pictures we took to help us remember.

Emotion Art
Here is some Emotion art that some of us did when we learned about Emotions.
First of all we learned about the different colours and the different emotions that they can sometimes represent.
Then we each did an emotions wheel, using different colours and patterns that represented these emotions for us.
Then we chose a medium through either photography or paint to show a chosen emotion.
How would you represent the different emotions?

Leap Frog- Writing text for a book
This week we have been sentences to go with pictures in a book called 'Leap Frog' that had no words. We could do a made up story or a description.
We found it challenging trying to think of our own text to fit in with the pictures. It was important for us to include adjectives and interesting sentences. Some of us added detail to our sentences by using conjunctions to add more. A challenge for us was to use a hook or onomatopoeia to include sound effects.
Here are some of our books. Some of them were made using Google Slides and some were made using Explain Everything.
Can you give us some feedback?

Chatter Pix
Yesterday we played with our learning and had some sandpit time with Chatter Pix. We took a picture of the book we are reading and recorded ourselves reading. Here are some of our finished videos.
Sick Sentences
This week, we have been working on some more sick sentences. We started off with a picture of an old railroad, and some sentences that weren't very good. We talked about what was in the picture and we talked about how we could make the sick sentences better. While we did each fix our own sentences, we also fixed them as a class. This is what we came up with...

While they put up their tent, they told scary stories. Suddenly they heard a paranormal noise floating through the woods, and they felt a bizarre feeling inside.
