Probability & Chance

This term we have started learning about probability and chance. We began with the question "Can I go to the park and play today?" and discussed all the different answers we could get.
We then ranked the words in order from Never to Yes.

We then played a game of chance with the black and red spinner.

To explore likelihood we played a few games and discussed the story of "Little Red Riding Hood"

We learnt that
  • you don't always get the outcome you want
  • there are games of chance in lots that we do
  • it seems to be a little luck - you won't always win
  • We use the words, impossible, unlikely, equal, likely, possible and certain

Shadows

This week we have been learning about Shadows. We had fun bringing our torches to school and experimenting with moving light and creating shadows with different types of objects and materials.

We learnt that shadows move depending on where the light comes from and the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque.

Elgregoe

Yesterday afternoon we were spoilt with a visit from Elgregoe the Magician!

He had some amazing different birds from different parts of the world. He was really good at making them appear from empty boxes etc.

Baillee and Mikayla from our learning space got called up to be Elgregoe's Assistants which was hilarious to watch.

Bailee had a lie detector put on her head and Elgregoe asked her lots of questions. Every time the lie detector thought Bailee wasn't telling the truth it lit up red and buzzed- her face was so funny when it lit up red.

Mikayla helped Elgregoe to float a table through the air by only holding a table cloth. She had to let go at one point because it went so high!

Here is one of the birds that came with Elgregoe.

Te reo Māori - Colours!

This term for Te reo Māori we are learning about colours and classroom objects. Today we started with colours. We played a game that was a bit like dominoes, where you had to match the colour to its Māori name. Here are some photos showing the colours, and the activity that we did.

Here are some photos of our kite flying afternoon- it was lots of fun!

Yoga Pose

We have been continuing to learn about writing instructions and we decided to link this to our Physical Literacy focus which stability.
We watched this video

and chose our favourite one to write our own instructions for.
We had play with our learning and challenged ourselves to write using our iPads.
Here is an example of what we did.

Measurement

Over the past 3 weeks we have been learning about measurement for Maths.
We've learned to use lots of different tools for measuring including our hands, 30cm rulers, 1m rulers and more!

Here are some pictures to show what we've been up to.

This group have been learning about centimetres and metres. Here we are measuring things around the school with our metre long pieces of string. It's really interesting to see the length, height or width of something and understand what a metre is.

They also used their metre long strings to measure the length of one of our breakout spaces. Here the group is working together to get an accurate measurement, ensuring the string pieces are touching and are straight.

Here they are ensuring every gap is filled. They made it to the end of the breakout space and discovered that it is 7.83m long, that's also the same as 783cms long. We had to get the metre ruler out to check the exact length because our last piece of string didn't fit perfectly.
This group has been measuring with non standard units. Today was their final lesson and they had to create a bridge that was long enough (and stable enough) for their gingerbread man to cross. They were only allowed to use: 2 pieces of A4 paper, cubes, sellotape, glue and scissors.
They came up with lots of different designs and did lots of estimating to figure out how long the bridge had to be.
